Star Lab

The kids were so excited for Star Lab!  We kept walking past that big gray dome all week, and it was finally our turn! Katie, the BV Naturalist, taught us about many of the constellations and how they change in the sky as the earth rotates.  It was very interesting, and the kids had so many good questions!

Volcano Time!

We had so much studying about the largest mountain in Japan - Mt. Fuji. This mountain just so happens to be a volcano, so Mia had a great idea! She said, "Let's make our own volcanoes!"  We all thought this would be awesome!  A big thank you to Mia and Mia's mom for bringing the supplies!  See the pictures below....

Aysia and Christine watching their volcanoes.

Parents... you can make these with your child at home.  Here is what you will need...  2 small paper cups (one with a hole, one without), baking soda, vinegar, food coloring, a long strip of tape, and a lid or plate to set the volcano on when it starts to overflow.
Fill the bottom of one paper cup (the one without the hole) with baking soda.  Set it on the lid or plate.  Put 4 to 6 drops of food coloring on top of the baking soda.  Place the second cup (the one with the hole) upside down over the paper cup filled with the baking soda.  Tape the 2 cups together tightly.  Slowly pour vinegar into the hole until the volcano begins to erupt.

February Fun!

February is going to be a fun month!  On Friday, Feb. 10th, we will be celebrating Chinese New Year!  The students will be doing 8 different activities related to our Asian unit . I will post pictures this weekend!  Next week Tuesday is Valentine's Day.  I sent home a class list in Saddlebags.  Tuesday is also the day of our Music Concert!  Please join us at 7:00 pm to hear some wonderful songs of love and friendship!  In the next couple weeks, we will also have a visit from our Partners in Excellence (BV Clinic), and a nutrition talk and taste tasting with Mrs. Muesenberger!

Thank you to all the parents that continue to encourage reading at home.  We have many reading logs that are being completed and many proud students!  Keep up the great work!

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing Winter Break!! I can't believe the wonderful weather this winter has brought us so far.  We are already halfway through the 2011-12 school year, and only 9 more weeks until Daylight Savings! I added something new to our classroom Blog.  On the right hand side, you will see the word, "Symbaloo."  If you click on it, you will find a webmix that I have organized with all of our favorite classroom websites.  Have fun!!  I will also be teaching students how to use Kid Blog, so watch for more information on this.
